Charles Fleek Memorial Highway Dedicated

A portion of KY 20 in Petersburg, Kentucky was deIMG_5132dicated as the Charles "Chalky" Fleek Memorial Highway on Friday, August 17, 2018. Charles Fleek is the only Boone County recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor. State Senator John Schickel sponsored legislation in the General Assembly to rename the portion of the highway in Sgt. Fleek's memory.

Sgt. Fleek was just 21 when he was killed during a battle on May 28, 1969, in Binh Duong Province.  Sgt. Fleek, a squad leader, saw a grenade that landed among his men during battle. At least eight soldiers near him hadn’t. He warned them and immediately threw himself on the grenade.

“Charles Fleek is a hero to us all here in Boone County,” said Judge-executive Gary Moore. “With this sign dedication, it ensures that his heroic action lives on for future generations to honor and remember.”
